Part of a Community Wide Celebration:
The American Jewish Legacy (AJL) is proud to present FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE PRAIRIE - 350 YEARS OF KOSHER - JEWISH LIFE IN AMERICA. The exhibit chronicles American Jewish life dating back to the first recorded landing of Jewish immigrants in New Amsterdam in 1654. It has been assembled in honor of the 350th anniversary of Jewish communal life in the U.S. (1654-2004).
This exhibit includes many fascinating historical narratives illustrating the kosher and Jewish experience through the Colonial period, the Gold Rush, and the Civil War, with special focus on traditional Jewish life in the Prairie and in the West. The exhibit’s panels and 30 minute audio-visual presentation also highlight kosher food advertisements in print, radio and recording.
From the exhibit’s opening at the Jacob K. Javits Center in NY in October of 2003, the exhibit has visited a number of cities as part of a national tour. It has received critical acclaim from the American Jewish historical community, as well as from the mainstream media.
